Today, around 65 percent of the produce samples analyzed by the US Department of Agriculture are tested positive for pesticide residues. Unless you are buying certified organic fruit and vegetables, the chances are that you are consuming a significant amount of pesticides every day.
To inform the public about this, Environmental Precautions Group (EWG) published a report that shows the most and less contaminated fruits and vegetables available on the market.
The worst list is called the Dirty Dozen, and this is the 12 items that you should buy organic.
The twelve Dirty Dozen items are the following: apples, strawberries, celery, grapes, peaches, spinach, sweet bell peppers, nectarines (imported), cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, snap peas (imported) and potatoes.
Fruits and vegetables with the least pesticides are the following: avocados, sweet corn, cabbage, pineapples, sweet peas (frozen), onions, avocados, mangos, asparagus, papayas, eggplant, kiwi, grapefruit, cantaloupe, cauliflower and sweet potatoes.
Here are some simple tricks that you can use to remove pesticide residues from the fruits and vegetables.
Put about one cup white vinegar in a bowl and leave the fruits and vegetables in for 15 minutes. Then, wash them well under running water. White vinegar kills around 98 percent of the bacteria and pesticides on fruits and vegetables.
Baking soda (Sodium bicarbonate)
The second option is baking soda. Mix one tablespoon baking soda in a bowl and leave the fruits and vegetables in for 15 minutes. Then, wash them well under running water. This rinse will remove most of the pesticide residue from the surface of the fruits and vegetables.
